Wave Cave Trail

We started off our first hike of the year conquering the Wave Cave Trail. This was not my ended trail as I was thinking we were headed to the Wind Cave Trail which is very different and shorter. I didn’t realize we were hiking the wrong trail until all was said and done though. Oh well!

wave caveThe Wave Cave Trail was full of beautiful views as its nestled very high up in the Superstition Mountains. The trail started off fairly easy and slowly inclined. Not too bad until you had to climb a little and I started getting a little dehydrated. Not too big of a deal.

As we reach what we thought was the top we look almost straight up and see the Wave Cave. When I say straight up, I mean literally we had half of a mile to go straight up the mountain. As always we were babywearing so we knew this was going to be a workout.

After taking many breaks on the way up and letting slipping hikers come down, we made it to the top. The 980 foot incline in 1.5 miles was enough to call for a break so we popped a squat and enjoyed the gorgeous view for a while.

Of course being at the Wave Cave I couldn’t resist taking a photo with the “wave” even though my boys were refusing to join me. I took a couple variations of photos, well correction, E, my 7 year old took a variety of photos but only a couple came out.

Once I soaked up my photo opportunities we prepared for our trek down. Someone had left a natural walking stick near the top so my husband snagged it. Coming down was definitely the hardest part of the trail. It was so steep that we all slipped multiple times. We were moving so slow that it felt like 3 miles of downward motion before we reached a lower decline.

The hike was great overall but I will say its not for beginners. The elevation change added with the steepness at the end of the trail is enough to call for many injuries. If you’re bringing school age children you are probably good and if you’re bringing toddlers or younger than be very careful!

This looks like such a beautiful trail to hike. Those are really interesting rock formations. I love hiking in the desert, would love to back. Florida is a bit boring when it comes to hikes. 🙂

I love the photo at the Wave Cave. Looks like a great place to hike. That 1/2 mile straight up sounds a little scary, but what a great workout!

What a beautiful hike! Even if you started on the wrong hike it looks like he discovered a place that was worth going. I love to hike and explore the area where I live too.

That looks so cool. Yeah I definitely have beginning hikers here with my five and seven year old, but hopefully they will be seasoned pros in a few years. We plan to do a lot of this kind in the coming years.

Sometimes taking the wrong trail ends up being the right trail. Sound like this was the perfect hike on the perfect day.

Wave Cave Trail is a 3 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate.

I love that second picture; it looks like a wonderful place to hike. I wish there was more national parks to hike where I’m from!

Wow. That was quite a climb. I wish I still had your strength, but this body can’t take more than just small inclines during hiking. You got rewarded by the pretty views though. The wave cave is so unique!

It does look like it was a beautiful hike. Although I can’t imagine having a toddler in tow while making that hike. I really need to take my daughter out and experience a few of these hikes out there.

It looks like you were able to enjoy some lovely scenery. I can see where you got the names mixed up, wind and wave both start with a w.
