Last year I ran the the Ice Cream 5k and had a good time but FINALLY someone created a frozen yogurt 5k! I like ice cream but its more of a treat I need to be in the mood for. However, when it comes to frozen yogurt, that’s a whole other ball game. I love frozen yogurt so when I saw the FroYo 5k show up in my facebook feed I was sold! I checked out their site and saw the cool gear they had to offer and signed up. Don’t get me wrong, I love having a shirt but having a hat and a drawstring back was appealing as well and not to mention the cute swirl medal.
The week of the FroYo 5k I received an email that contained a link to the “day of details” page on their site. Here there was an informational video on what to do when you arrive on site for the run. It was straight forward, quirky, and informational without being too cheesy. I think having a quick little video like this is very helpful for first time runners as I’m sure it helps keep the flow of traffic moving.
When we arrived we were able to navigate our way through the lines seamlessly to our goodie bags. We pulled out our bibs and checked out our bags only to see we didn’t get a drawstring bag that was advertised after all which was rather disappointing. I was running with an infant so I grabbed some necessities out of the diaper bag so that I could put them in the drawstring bag I thought I was receiving and check it.
Right around 9am we got ready at the starting line for the run. There were a decent amount of people running but being about halfway back in the crowd we could barely here what the announcer was saying so we just waited out to see what the crowd was doing. This wasn’t that big of a deal as we were off running at the correct starting time.
The course was very easy and laid out with cones and policeman lining the way so there was no confusion or cars trying to unsafely cut runners off. We hit mile one in okay timing for our first water break then headed off again. When we hit the “FroZone” there was an energetic volunteer there cheering us on through inflatable arches but no misting or cooling off that we thought there would be. Thankfully it was only in the upper 70’s with a breeze and not too hot!
We made our way around the bend to the finish line and ran through a series of inflatable arches to the finish line. We were greeted with our medal and a bottle of water. We caught our breath, took a selfie, and headed for the grand prize. FroYo, duh. We saw the only choices were plain tart and strawberry which I found disappointing at first. With as many allergies as people have now a days I wouldn’t think strawberry would be an option I would choose but hey, not my race. As for plain tart, its just that, plain.
I sucked it up and went with plain tart and picked 4 out of the 5 available toppings. The more I ate the FroYo I realized that Plain Tart wasn’t so bad after all since all of the toppings went well with it. There weren’t too many vendors to look at but the host announced the first place runners(we would love to know what their time was!) promptly and called up volunteers for some prize winning games.
Overall I disliked the lack of drawstring bag that was promised and think choosing strawberry as a flavor was risky. However, I loved the FroYo and toppings, different run gear, quirky informational video, and the many volunteers. Also, the photographers did a good job at trying to capture everyone as they were running through it seemed so that is always nice! Not to mention the digital downloads were decently priced at $2.99 each. For just starting out I think the FroYo 5k was a success and they did a great job without any noticeable hiccups!

Hopefully that FroYo place will get their act together for the next race! At least you were able to get out and enjoy the time with your family.

I would have signed up for that 5K, too! Any reason to eat some fro yo It sounds like a great incentive to finish the race.

Plain tart is my favorite. The only topping I would add to it is slivered almonds or walnuts.

I hate when I sign up for a race (and train for it) and the organization is off. It has happened so many times that I prefer to simply donate money to causes and just run by myself.

I love FroYo too, and totally would have signed up for this! Then I would have been mad there was no chocolate froyo at the finish line

That is a bummer to hear about the froyo but it looks like it was still a fun race! Hopefully it’s better next time around.

Bummer on the organization of the event – still, for an inaugural effort I guess not too bad. It sounds like you had fun in spite of the shortcomings, and hey, FroYo.

I love frozen yogurt!! About 2 months ago I was literally going 2 times a week, lol. I’ve cooled it a little recently, but it’s definitely a go to snack!

I don’t think , well I know I would not be able to run 5k, maybe walk these days! I love frozen yogurt and always think it is so healthy for me!

The Froyo 5 k sounds like it was an amazing time indeed with the frozen yogurt at the end. I have never had tart frozen yogurt before. The strawberry would have been my choice and I love how they had 5 different toppings. Sounds amazing. Thanks for sharing.

Not a huge fan of FroYo myself. I don’t really get it. What are the allergies to strawberries? That’s a strange thing to be allergic to. Glad you had fun anyway 😀

I’m not a huge fan of Froyo — but the race looks like you had a great time. Hopefully they’ll have the kinks worked out before next year.

That looks like so much fun, but I would be so disappointed if I ran all that distance (being as I don’t run….at all in the first place lol) only to find out no drawstring bag!!! What?!
